About renewal

Prev Next

Renewal is the process of replacing an existing certificate that is approaching expiration (or has specific issues) with a new certificate that re-establishes the same or similar trust attributes, with an extended validity period based on the original expiration date. If no renewal eligibility or credit is available, the renewal request will fail.

A good practice about certificate renewal is to renew early to avoid disruptions, avoid policy changes, and reduce risks.

The renewal process will vary depending on each certification authority. For GoDaddy certificates, the certificate and the product will be renewed together, with a new validity period beginning immediately after the previous certificate expires.

Alert

For GoDaddy certificates, renewal will consume an available renewal credit or applicable account balance.

When should I renew a certificate?

Renew certificates in scenarios such as:

  • Before the expiration date.
  • Compliance with changing policies.
